St Andrews: The Cathedral of Golf

The Old Course at St Andrews is the most famous golf course in the world. Links Golf: What to Expect

Links golf is fundamentally different from parkland golf. The ground is firm and fast, the rough is deep and punishing, and the wind — always the wind — makes every hole play differently day to day. Running the ball along the ground is as valid a shot as high iron approaches. Bring extra balls.

When to Go

The Scottish season runs April to October. June and July offer the longest days (tee times as late as 8:30pm) and the most settled weather, though settled in Scotland is always relative. April and May offer fewer crowds and competitive pricing.

Getting There

Edinburgh and Glasgow airports both offer direct flights from most UK cities. St Andrews is 1 hour from Edinburgh; Royal Dornoch is 3 hours by car. A week-long trip combining St Andrews, a Highland course and one Ayrshire links makes for a near-perfect itinerary.
